Library Assistant Job Description

 

Library Assistant – Circulation may work in Adult Services, Children’s Services or in Branch Agencies and is responsible for the following:

 

  • Charge and discharge books, register patrons, handle reserves, route books, collect fines, call patron reserves, pass on damaged materials to Technical Services, etc., and all other duties associated with Circulation and as delegated by their immediate supervisor.

 

  • Answer informational questions.

 

  • Help develop the collection through suggestions based on the reading of reviews, patron requests and by understanding where the current collection is lacking.

 

  • Assist patrons with the use of the Public Access Catalog.

 

  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by their supervisor.

 

Library Assistant – Cargo reports to the Outreach Coordinator, works in the library’s delivery area and is responsible for the following:

 

  • Use the library’s circulation system to check in and route materials, pass on damaged materials to Technical services, etc. or identify damaged materials following library guidelines.

  • Pack and unpack patron requested materials following guidelines to ensure the safe delivery of those materials to and from the library.

  • Lift and carry bags and other containers of materials such as books and audio visual materials.

 

  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by their supervisor.

 

Requirements:

High school diploma or GED required, additional education preferred. The ability to type and to alphabetize and basic math skills required. Demonstrated customer service skills and commitment to excellent public service required. Must be able to meet the flexible scheduling requirements of the library. Ability to perform the major functions of the position required.
